Job Summary:

Serves as Independent Donor Advocate to all living donor candidates throughout all phases of donation. (This position is not involved in the care of transplant recipients.)

Assists the potential donor in understanding the nature of organ donation, and in obtaining and understanding information regarding the consent process, evaluation process, surgical process, and the need for continued follow up. . Protects and promotes the best interests of the potential living donor. Advocates for the rights of the potential living donor and ensures the donor's decision is informed and free of coercion. Assists in the resolution of concerns or complaints that living donor candidates may have. Notifies the Living Donor Selection Committee of any reservations with donation. Participates in research by implementation of protocols and the collection of data. Attends conferences and meetings pertaining to these studies. Facilitates procedures, which enable the implementation of studies with various interdepartmental components. Provides in-service for nursing staff and presentations for any outside organization or group inquiring about the transplantation process. Other duties as assigned. Education: Must be knowledgeable in the living organ donation process and in the informed consent process. Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills. Has an understanding of the potential coercive pressures on donor candidates. Maintains current knowledge of UNOS/OPTN policies pertaining to living donation. Obtains continuing education pertinent to living donation and transplantation. BSN with two years of hire.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: State licensure as Registered Nurse (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Managerial Responsibilities: Includes overall accountability for assigned work group relative to operational goals, personnel requirements, and budgetary constraints. Note: The above stated duties are intended to outline those functions typically performed by individuals assigned to this classification. Required Experience: BSN or 5 years in transplant or related field.

Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion, manual finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires working under stressful conditions and working irregular hours. Must be willing to be on call 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.

Personal Protective Equipment: Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
